Kamps Releases Sustainability Report

Kamps, Inc. has published its 2022 Environmental Sustainability Report (ESR), marking its second annual release. It reflects the company’s progress through its Green Scorecard initiatives, which focus on tracking and reporting key environmental metrics.

The 2022 ESR substantiates Kamps' environmental claims with the latest research and serves as an essential tool for internal team assessments, informing future ecological strategies. Additionally, the report reassures customers of Kamps' alignment with their environmental objectives, highlighting the significant impact of its services on their sustainability efforts.

Key highlights from the 2022 ESR include:

Carbon Footprint Analysis & Methodology Enhancements: Kamps disclosed that around 46,000 metric tons of CO2-e were emitted in 2022, correlated with recycling over 199 million pallets. This rate is lower per pallet recycled than the industry average. The report also details improvements in calculating Scope 2 emissions, transitioning to using actual electricity usage data for more accurate emissions representation.

Logistics Fleet Carbon Footprint: Over half of Kamps’ operational carbon footprint is attributed to its Logistics fleet fuel consumption. Efforts to optimize fleet performance and routing were undertaken, leading to an increase in overall route time by 1.63% and miles traveled by about 80%, due to the integration of newly acquired locations.

Carbon Offsets: In 2022, Kamps recycled over 390 million pallets network-wide, offsetting 10,309,336 metric tons of CO2 emissions. A specialized carbon handprint analysis indicated that recycling over 199 million pallets at owned facilities prevented over 850,000 metric tons of CO2-e emissions, and producing nearly 1 million cubic yards of mulch from scrap pallets contributed to an offset of approximately 3,000 metric tons of CO2-e emissions.

Green Energy Initiatives: Kamps focuses on extending the lifespan of its products and ensuring eco-friendly disposal. Ground scrap pallets are transformed into Green Energy, including biofuel and wooden pellets. For instance, a co-generation plant in Michigan produced over 25,000 MWh of energy in 2022 using Kamps’ biofuel, and the company produced over 60,000 tons of wooden pellets, providing a sustainable heating alternative.
