As a preventive measure, attendees reinforced the importance of reference checks and screening prospective employees. Companies are looking for attributes such as high character, being good team players and positive in outlook.

How do you help new employees get up to speed?

Given the reality of available labor, employers say that they have to be more patient than they would have been in the past. “It's really hard at times to get people that are willing to work hard,” one member stated. Sometimes employees do not work out in a particular role, so they are tried at other jobs to see if they can have greater success. It is important to identify their skills and develop them. 

“As an employer, I'm willing to give someone three months before I'd say they're really not going to get it,” the attendee stated. The main thing to see is continued improvement in their productivity over time.   

Aside from trying struggling employees on different jobs, another approach is to try switching up the buddy or trainer to see if it helps.
