WESTERN HUNTING JOURNAL
DAVE SMITH
Dave Smith lives and hunts
in the Willamette Valley of
Northwest Oregon, the most
highly-regulated goose hunt in
the country. Hunting wintering
geese over a six-month-long
season, where certain subspe-
cies are off-limits has forced
him to adapt or die. He is the
founder of Dave Smith Decoys
and credited with making the
first ultra-realistic hunting de-
coys. In this issue, Dave writes
about the art of hiding well
while hunting Canada geese.
JOHN CHILDS
John Childs is an outdoor
enthusiast, who from the
earliest age recognized hunting
and fishing would be more
than just a hobby but a way of
life. He’s worked in the outdoor
industry for over 25 years and is
just as passionate today about
hunting, shooting, fishing,
and other outdoor activities
as when he was a youngster
growing up South Texas. Today,
John lives in Portland, Oregon
and hunts throughout the
West. In this issue, he writes
about hunting whitetail deer in
Northern Idaho.
ZACH MANSFIELD
Born in Eastern Oregon and
raised among the sage brush
flats of Central Oregon, Zach’s
appetite for life was fostered
along the banks Deschutes
River and in the foothills of
the Cascade Mountain range.
Today Zach calls Eastern
Oregon home where he takes
every chance he gets to go
afield with his wife, daughter
and yellow lab. In this issue,
Zach writes about hard-earned
lessons learned while archery
hunting. Zach is a field editor
for Western Hunting Journal.
