Situated between Fayetteville and Prairie Grove , just outside the busier areas of Northwest Arkansas , Farmington is home to several interesting businesses that have a historic feel and niche area of expertise . One such business , Onion Creek Home , is a unique destination for your next shopping trip .
Onion Creek Home is a gift shop with a little bit of everything , including a large selection of home decor items to choose from . The building is 3,000 square feet and is over 100 years old . The owner , Leah Williamson , fell in love with the historic building when looking for a place to settle her business after moving back from Baton Rouge , Louisiana . But Onion Creek Home ’ s story begins long before settling into historic Farmington , and Williamson has a lot to tell about the namesake , the nature of the business , and how they got to where they are today .
“ I started out in Baton Rouge in 2006 . The store has been my passion for a long time now , but before opening I was actually working in the corporate world . My job was monotonous and I knew that I wasn ’ t doing what I was meant to do ,” said Williamson . “ I continuously mentioned to my husband that I felt like I should open a store . I didn ’ t know what kind of store , but I wanted something where I could own my work .”
She toyed with the idea of owning a shop and what kind of shop it would be , until one day she came home from work and told her husband she just couldn ’ t take the corporate mess anymore . She loved working , but she wanted to own her own work and make a difference in the lives of those around her . Her husband
looked at her and said , “ Then let ’ s do it . Let ’ s open your store .” And from that moment , Onion Creek Home began to come to fruition .
Williamson felt that the Lord had opened a door for her , and she only had to take a leap of faith . “ The gift shop Onion Creek Home in Farmington actually became my staple business later ,” she explained .
Her original store in Baton Rouge was a little different than her shop in Farmington . She followed the markets and the supply and demand of the area , and started to build her business and her network . With trial and error , she began to shape her business and the trajectory of her life as the owner of Onion Creek Home .
“ The name of my shop was something that took a while to settle on . I thought of many names that were interesting or unique , and several that had to do with my life . But I realized one day when reminiscing on where I grew up , that the name Onion Creek Home was meant to be . I was raised in Marble , Arkansas , just outside of Huntsville , and I grew up on a creek called Onion Creek . So , even though I was far from Onion Creek in Baton Rouge , I knew that name was meant to be . It was home ,” she explained .
After settling on the perfect name and opening her store , Williamson began running and managing the business full time . She moved back to Arkansas ten years ago , around 2014 , and she leased a place in Fayetteville for two years for Onion Creek Home , but the location wasn ’ t what she wanted long-term .
“ I began my search for a permanent location and the minute I walked into the building in Farmington that we currently run the business in , I knew I was home . I knew Onion Creek was home ,” she said .
The history and character she felt when she walked into the building was part of the core structure of the building , and Williamson ’ s entire business is about offering an experience from the moment you walk into the door . Part of that experience for her customers is the spacious , historic building . The other part , of course , is the merchandise .
“ People come into the store and they smell something nice or they see something beautiful , like our silk floral arrangements , and they can just enjoy , relax , break down and share what is on their heart ,” she said . “ Onion Creek Home provides a space for more than just mindless shopping . It is an entire experience . If you need to re-energize yourself or find a product that will realign the energy in your home , come to Onion Creek Home .”
Onion Creek Home carries an array of gift shop-esque items from candles , jewelry , gourmet food , kitchenware , Mud Pie products , chandeliers and picture frames to more sentimental and inspirational items , like memorabilia for lost pets or loved ones . They have a garden room with silk floral arrangements that are lifelike and stunning . They carry men ’ s clothing , women ’ s clothing , stationary , pillows , throws , tables , chairs , and more . If you can dream it , you can find it at Onion Creek Home .
Williamson says that her favorite part of owning and running Onion Creek Home is by far her customers . “ Someone walks in the store , and no matter how they look or what your first impression is , they are all fascinating people . You never know someone ’ s story and you can never predict the path a person walks by just looking at them . I ’ ve met some of the most fabulous people and they enrich my day just as much as my store can enrich theirs .”
Onion Creek Home is located at 183 W . Main St ., Farmington , and are open 10 a . m . to 5:30 p . m . Monday through Friday and 10 a . m . to 4 p . m . Saturday . The drive is worth the experience at Onion Creek Home .
