When you ’ re a kid , things your parents do seem weird . taking naps when they don ’ t have to ( on the sofa , snoring ). Eating brussels sprouts and enjoying them . Watching old episodes of “ The Lawrence Welk Show .” Pretty much what I do today – except for the last one . It ’ s “ Frasier ” reruns for me . And I ’ ve never heard me snore . Rumors to the contrary are fake news .
One thing they did took me into adulthood to figure out : their love of buttermilk .
My mother had to have it to make cornbread . The milk I put in my Cocoa Krispies wouldn ’ t do . And why did she prefer the kind which had what the label called “ butter flakes ” in it ? They looked like orange bits of plastic to me , floating in the thick , off-white liquid . It smelled definitely unappealing , like it was a day
