Volunteers sort bicycles and toys ahead of the Mac ’ s Toy Fund 1962 Distribution Party . Recognizing the need among area families during the holiday season , Beckley Post-Report Editor Ted " Mac " McDowell organized the toy fund in 1930 , in the early years of the Great Depression . Ninety-two years later , Mac ' s commitment to area children lives on through the annual event which distributes toys , coats and food to those in need .
