A postcard , sent on Feb . 17 , 1913 , shows staff members standing in front of Beckley ' s first hospital , The Campbell Hospital . According to the Raleigh County Historical Society , the hospital , founded by local physician and politician Dr . J . A . Campbell , opened in 1906 . An ad featuring the same photo ran in The Raleigh Herald in 1910 , listing Campbell as the surgeon in charge and A . G . Bowels as the assistant surgeon .
