Tradition-rich ’ Jacks returning to the basics

Richwood had a season for the ages in basketball a quarter century ago .
The Lumberjacks ran the table on the regular season , all the way to Class AA semifinals where they lost to Tug Valley .
The Richwood team was led by basketball players like Jay Hewitt , who would sign with WVU , Pat Caufield and Matt Donahue .
And it ’ s been a quarter century since the Lumberjacks made that run to the state tournament .
Nobody knows that better than new coach Levi Mowery , a Richwood graduate who played for the Lumberjacks from 2011- 2015 .
He ’ d like nothing better than to lead his alma mater to a basketball resurgence .
But he also knows that , like Rome , a basketball program isn ’ t built in a day .
At the end of the day , it won ’ t necessarily be wins and losses when counting success .
“ I played here from 2011 to 2015 . We weren ’ t anywhere near that 1999 team , but we had a solid team ,” Mowery said as the Lumberjacks continued their preparations for the upcoming campaign .
“ My assistant coaches and I know the importance of positive role models in coaches and wanted to be that for these guys . Richwood has been dealt a good bit of turmoil and turnover in the past few years , so we just want to be there for the kids and give them something to be excited about .”
The Lumberjacks were 2-21 last season and are looking to recapture some of the past glory from a school whose alumni includes Mike Barrett , who was a gold medal-winning member the 1968 U . S . Olympic basketball team .
The Lumberjacks lost five seniors from last year ’ s team , many who played a key role in the offense , including leading scorer Grant Russell ( 15.1 ppg ), Trae Trivolette ( 9.9 ), Tyler Barnhouse ( 6.3 ), Dalton Spencer ( 2.1 ) and Skyler Broyles ( 1.8 ).
That group combined to score 76 percent of the team ’ s 46 points per game .
Mowery isn ’ t going to chop down the program for a massive rebuild , but he does won ’ t to go back to the basics early in practice and games .
“ I ’ d say the first year in , we will be trying to do some new things ,” Mowery said . “ The kids aren ’ t used to playing certain ways , so it ’ s going to be a slow process to start forming some good habits and buying into the whole package , but we hope to be well conditioned and tough on defense .”
It a young group , that Mowery said is “ more athleticism than skill .”
Among the key players will be Ian Crowder ( 2.8 ppg in 2023-24 ), Christian Griffith ( 4.2 ) Preston Boyce , Brock Ward ( 1.3 ) and Grady Hall .
“ These guys are all solid guards that can make shots and handle the ball ,” Mowery said .
The guys with some size , Christian Neal and Blake Frame will anchor the defense and can finish inside
Young players Travis Johnson and Fawkes O ’ Dell are young and athletic and should have an opportunity to get a look at some point this season .
