CONCLUSION
This report describes a patient who developed type 3c DM in the setting of acute severe necrotizing pancreatitis presenting with DKA, a rare phenomenon with no prior reported cases. Education of all providers about the risk of developing DM following an episode of severe acute pancreatitis in addition to patients with cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis, chronic pancreatitis, a history of a pancreatectomy, or other pancreatic pathologies is paramount for the early recognition and appropriate treatment of type 3c DM. Clinicians should be more aware of this rare but serious complication of acute pancreatitis and if patient exhibits persistent hyperglycemia during hospitalization we should treat and monitor elevated blood glucose levels by providing proper patient education, testing supplies, and prescription medications, including insulin if appropriate.
