Marshall Names Dr . David Gozal New School of Medicine Dean
Marshall University President Brad D . Smith announced in June that David Gozal , MD , MBA , a pediatric pulmonologist and world-renowned pediatric sleep expert , has been named the incoming dean and vice president for health affairs at the Marshall University Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine .
Gozal comes to Marshall from the University of Missouri ( UM ), where he served as the Marie M . and Harry L . Smith Endowed Chair and chairman of the Department of Child Health , as well as the physician-in-chief of the UM Health Children ’ s Hospital .

The new group of trainees includes three rural general surgery residents who are part of the nation ’ s first officially designated , separately accredited rural residency training track program . The trio will spend at least two and a half of their five-year program training under long-time rural surgeons Drs . Jodi Cisco-Goff and James Paugh at Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan , WV .
“ We are proud to lead the nation in the first rural general surgery residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education ,” said Program Director Farzad Amiri , MD , FACS , a general surgeon and associate professor at the Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine . “ It is of utmost importance that we train the next generation of surgeons to have the skills to handle the challenges seen in rural America .”
Prior to his work at UM , Gozal served in positions at Tulane University , the University of Louisville , and the University of Chicago , among others . The recipient of dozens of honors , awards , and recognitions for his work , Gozal has been a federally funded National Institutes of Health researcher since 1992 . He has published over 850 peer-reviewed original articles with more than 80,000 citations , making him one of the most highly cited researchers in his discipline .
He graduated from Hebrew University of Jerusalem with his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed a pediatric residency in Israel , followed by a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine at Children ’ s Hospital of Los Angeles . Additionally , he earned MBA degrees from Georgetown University and ESADE in Barcelona , Spain .
“ These are very exciting times for Marshall University ,” Gozal said . “ I am simply ecstatic and humbled to be honored with the responsibilities of leading the Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine into a brighter and healthier future for all West Virginians and beyond .”

Marshall School of Medicine Welcomes First Cohort of Rural Surgery Residents
More than 103 incoming resident physicians and fellows officially began their post-graduate medical training in July at the Marshall
Marshall ’ s newest cohort of trainees represents 60 medical schools across 14 different states and 22 countries . Thirty-two are medical alumni representing all three of West Virginia ’ s medical schools .
The Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine now has 289 total trainees across 26 programs , the largest number of trainees in the school ’ s 46-year history .
