CASE STUDY : Four-year-old Riley presented to her pediatrician , Dr . Sue , due to fatigue and developing congestion , cough , and fever .
Dr . Sue completed an examination with negative rapid testing for influenza and COVID-19 . Based on the symptoms , Dr . Sue believed that a course of antibiotics might be indicated , but considering current community disease trends , she chose respiratory PCR testing to definitively confirm what pathogens were present .
PCR results showed that Riley was negative for any bacterial pathogens but was positive for RSV and rhinovirus / enterovirus , which is only identifiable through PCR testing . With this information , Dr . Sue did not prescribe antibiotics . Riley was monitored for worsening symptoms , including those of AFM .
