In December 2025, West Virginia Executive( WVE) fostered a shelter pup named Piper from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association for a day. This was a fun-filled experience that eventually resulted in Piper finding her forever home. Our day with Piper got me thinking about rescue animals and their place in our lives not only as professionals but as West Virginians.
Christmas 2025 with Piper.
My family has rescued two dogs— Tori and Little Man. Tori, a Norwegian Elkhound mix, was a bona fide shelter dog, adopted by us when she was four months old. Little Man, a chihuahua, was used for breeding and handed over to us in horrible condition: fleas, mange and gingivitis, among other things.
Both dogs changed drastically after rescue. Tori became a sweet, gentle and loveable girl who wouldn’ t hurt a fly and loved her people more than anything. Little Man, though it took some time, grew accustomed to his new home and continues to slowly overcome his past. He has made incredible strides throughout our time with him. In both, you could see genuine appreciation and serenity in being saved, and nothing results in more pride than that.
All dogs deserve a loving
Tori.
home, but one fact won’ t escape me: shelters across the state are packed full of animals just like Tori, Little Man and Piper. As professionals, we lead busy, often stressful lives, and— speaking from experience— coming home to a precious pet you are responsible for freeing can keep you grounded and fulfilled. In West Virginia, we fight hard for our families and communities, and giving our local animals loving homes fits right into that box. Taking care of rescue animals is hard work, but it’ s honest and rewarding, and if you’ re looking for a companion, there is no better place to turn. See you next time! •
