With a rural environment and aging population , healthcare access is a hot topic in West Virginia . Because of the effects of demographically higher rates of illnesses and lessons learned from COVID-19 , the healthcare landscape is quickly changing . Large and small healthcare providers alike are recognizing the need to adapt their facilities to provide better flexibility , efficiency , quality and access to care .
Organizations are considering facility capital projects that incorporate telehealth services , enhance patient flow and improve air quality . One local architecture firm has been assisting providers across West Virginia to meet those changing needs . With a portfolio ranging from inpatient treatment facilities and hospital renovations to ambulatory services and pharmacy locations , The Thrasher Group has worked in communities in every corner of the state on these issues . Lately , though , the requests of these clients have been changing .
Arthur brings more than 14 years of healthcare design experience to the Thrasher team and is dedicated to improving healthcare facilities throughout the state . Arthur ’ s specialization in healthcare design and former employment as the facilities architect for a West Virginia health system lends an added level of detail and expertise to every project . He and the Thrasher architecture team support healthcare organizations as they realize their vision for inpatient , outpatient and diagnostic services .
One of Thrasher ’ s more recently completed projects is Community Care of West Virginia ’ s expansion of its rural healthcare services into Buckhannon , WV . This adaptive reuse project transformed an old bank into a new CareXpress facility , updating the building and adding exam rooms , provider offices , a conference room and more .
“ First and foremost , we continue to see trends shifting care from inpatient services to outpatient and telehealth services ,” says Thrasher ’ s Architecture Division Lead Craig Baker . “ It ’ s making a big impact on how facilities are being planned and what features to prioritize in an effort to improve the patient and user group experience .”
The Thrasher Group responded to these changing needs not only in its design philosophy , but in its team , welcoming Casey Arthur , MBA , AIA , NCARB , LEED AP as senior architect and healthcare market leader .

“ The concept behind the design of this facility was really more of a theater experience ,” says Baker . “ It is centered around a way for patients to find comfort while waiting , creating a more positive experience when going to the doctor .”
This facility not only adds a new level of comfort for its patients in Buckhannon but will allow Community Care of West Virginia to continue providing the highest level of service to residents in the area .
“ Thrasher ’ s mission centers on improving the communities where we live and work ,” says Arthur . “ I ’ m proud to be a part of that through something I personally feel is paramount to the future of West Virginia , and that is healthcare .”
