Editor ’ s
While you may have stumbled across my byline and work in the fall 2023 issue of West Virginia Executive ( WVE ), this is the first issue in which I have taken on more editorial responsibilities .
I joined the WVE team in July 2023 as the editorial and production manager . In the last seven months , which have flown by , WVE has provided me with many new opportunities for both professional and personal growth , such as Leadership Kanawha Valley .
Leadership Kanawha Valley is a program run by the Charleston Area Alliance that allows both young professionals and senior executives to connect and learn from each other ’ s expertise and experiences . I am halfway through this eight-session program , and I have already learned so much about what goes into being an effective and respected leader . I decided to apply for this program to push myself to try new things , and I am glad I did because it has taught me a lot about myself .
One session that stands out to me was hosted at Goodwill Industries of Kanawha Valley , Inc . We received personalized
Everything DiSC reports that were based on our responses to a survey taken prior to this session . My DiSC style was CS , which means I have characteristics of both the conscientiousness and steadiness styles . The conscientiousness style is thoughtful and questioning and describes people who are analytical , reserved and precise . The steadiness style is thoughtful and accepting and describes people who are gentle , accommodating and patient with others ’ inaccuracies . I felt my results were accurate , and I was able to gain insight into why I approach situations the way I do . Having both styles ’ characteristics means I have a composed mindset .
So , how does this relate to my role at WVE ? Having a composed mindset allows me to remain calm in stressful , chaotic situations , which is especially beneficial during the end of a magazine cycle . Being composed also enables me to be diplomatic and have great attention to detail . This is important when working with my team to find solutions to challenges and produce the best content possible . That being said , I am incredibly grateful to have the small but strong , supportive team of people to work with that I do at this stage in my life . Working in an environment where I can thrive rather than survive truly makes all the difference . Here ’ s to another wonderful issue of WVE . •
