Torie Geis , Charleston Area Medical Center manager of medical command for regions three and four , describes the new units as game-changers .
“ Using cutting-edge technology , these simulators provide a unique , hands-on experience to students and emergency providers across the state ,” says Geis . “ Charleston Area Medical Center , in conjunction with the Charleston Med- Base team and EMS WV : Answer the Call , recently used these simulators in our first-ever EMS Education Day . Performing simulations with the extremely life-like mannequins on the SIMS truck , students experienced realistic situations that are impossible to mimic in traditional classrooms .”
Through these units , educators are able to communicate directly with students inside the truck through a microphone , and every session is recorded .
“ Trainings are recorded so the simulation experience can be played back for students to review and understand proper procedures and processes ,” says Geis .
While these units are making great strides in the accessibility of proper training and education for emergency medical workers in West Virginia , they are not without their challenges .
“ Access to quality equipment is probably the biggest challenge we see across the state ,” says Cooper . “ The high-fidelity simulation equipment is very expensive , some as much as $ 60,000 for one mannequin to own and operate , so most agencies do not have access to them .”
The presence of mobile simulation units in the Mountain State was made possible through collaboration with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission
