With an aim of attracting and retaining talented students who are looking to reduce medical school debt without sacrificing academic quality , the WVU School of Medicine has launched the Mountaineer Accelerated Track to Enter Residency program . In providing advanced training outside of medical education , the communication sciences disorders program moved to the school of medicine , which includes the re-opening of the doctoral program in audiology — the only one in the state . With brand new lab space and clinical rotations , students learn how to diagnose and treat a wide range of vestibular and hearing disorders , ensuring all patients have a voice .
Increasing access to and diversifying rehabilitation is an important priority as well . The school is offering its first orthopedic physical therapy residency program and expanding the hand therapy program .
The Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute continues to drive research related to the brain . A recent grant from the National Institutes of Health was awarded to explore the role that a specific enzyme plays in protecting the brain from stroke and the effects of aging . •
