West Virginia Executive Winter 2022 February 2022 | Page 8

Editor ’ s

While you might have seen my byline and work since the summer 2021 issue of West Virginia Executive ( WVE ) magazine , I ’ d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself .
My name is Emily Rice . I was born and raised just outside of Charleston , WV . When I was a teenager , I decided I wanted to be a journalist . Soon , my new aspiration expanded to include photography , design and all aspects of publication . I earned my bachelor ’ s degrees in journalism and photography from Marshall University in 2016 .
After college , I spent five years in newspaper journalism . From my stint as a photographer in Durango , CO , to my previous position as features editor of The Bluefield Daily Telegraph and associate editor of Prerogative magazine , I spent those years gathering experience and learning more about what I loved on each job or gig that I took .
By the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic , I lived just far enough away from home , over the state border in Virginia , to make those miles an unsafe distance to travel for those in quarantine , and I spent over a year apart from my family .
After job hunting with an aim for my hometown for the first few months of 2021 , my phone lit up with a LinkedIn notification on a Sunday night . The job posting was from a publication called WVE magazine , looking to hire a
managing editor . I spent that night pouring over the content available online and through archives , and after seeing the light shone on my home state of West Virginia through the work of this publication , I knew I wanted to be a part of it .
Luckily , in the spring of 2021 , shortly after my 27th birthday , I had the chance to interview with Kensie Hamilton Fauber , the magazine ’ s publisher and managing partner , and the rest of the team . I was left with a smile on my face and an even stronger desire to be a part of the work they did .
To my honor and delight , I was offered the position , and by the end of May , I ’ d moved back to my hometown to start a job in my dream career , publishing .
In the months since I was welcomed warmly onto the team , I have learned so much more than I could have dreamed and had the opportunity to work with amazing people . It is a great honor to help carry on WVE ’ s mission and tradition of shining a light on my home state of West Virginia . •
