Marshall Orthopaedics Continues to Innovate
As part of an academic health system , Marshall Orthopaedics strives to bring the latest technology and techniques to the tri-state so patients do not have to travel for the highest quality care . In 2021 , the department introduced two new procedures to the region .
Postless Hip Arthroscopy
Dana Lycans , M . D ., assistant professor at the Marshall Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine and orthopaedic surgeon at Marshall Health , completed the tri-state ’ s first postless hip arthroscopy to repair hip impingement and labral tear . Postless hip arthroscopy is a new , cutting-edge technique that eliminates the need for a post by using a special surgical table to create the pull traction on the leg required for the surgery .
“ My goal as a surgeon is to provide relief for the patient while minimizing the risk of complications ,” says Lycans . “ Eliminating the post allows for decreased pain postoperatively , less risk for nerve damage and numbness and the potential for a faster recovery when compared to traditional hip arthroscopy .”
All the same procedures that use traditional hip arthroscopy may be performed without the post . To learn more , call the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute at ( 304 ) 691-1880 .
Computer-Assisted Revision Total Knee Replacement
With computer-assisted technology growing in popularity for hip and knee replacements , the joint replacement surgeons at Marshall
Orthopaedics apply this technology for the revision of a total knee replacement ( TKR ). Unlike traditional surgery , the surgeons use CT scans of the patient taken prior to surgery as a guide . Robotic tools help determine what thickness of bone to remove , where to make cuts and how to properly tension soft tissues . The surgeon then uses a robotic arm to ensure the utmost accuracy and precision . Patients report positive outcomes with well-aligned revision TKR components and excellent range of motion .
“ Our goal is always to innovate , increase patient satisfaction and decrease the likelihood of re-revision surgery by using the latest technology available to us ,” says Alex Caughran , M . D ., assistant professor at the Joan C . Edwards School of Medicine and orthopaedic surgeon at Marshall Health .
