Caring for Those in Need
Founded in 1982 by a small group of civic-minded volunteer physicians who recognized the need for ongoing health care among the most vulnerable members of our community , WV Health Right strives to provide low-income , uninsured and underinsured West Virginians in need with access to free quality , comprehensive health care .
Although services were mainly offered to people in Charleston in its early years , today , WV Health Right provides more than 40,000 uninsured , underinsured and medically underserved individuals statewide with free health care valued at over $ 25 million annually .
We are proud to serve patients from 34 counties and counting . Our locations include three clinics in Charleston and seven mobile unit sites in the region .

WV Health Right ’ s health care services are available to low-income adult patients who are uninsured or have Medicaid or Medicare at our main clinic and Covenant House locations , and the West Side Clinic serves individuals ages 12 and up . Our patients consist of low-income individuals who have government insurance who cannot find a medical home or need care not provided by their insurance ; individuals with low-wage jobs that provide no health benefits ; individuals who are unemployed or have been laid off ; individuals who are experiencing homelessness ; low-income senior citizens ; and the working poor who cannot afford private insurance due to high premiums , deductibles and co-pays .
In addition to our staff , a dedicated and wide-ranging team of health care professionals volunteer their time and talents to ensure access to quality health care for the ever-growing numbers of patients seeking treatment . Because of them , we can offer comprehensive medical care , including specialty care , pharmaceutical assistance , dental services ( onsite and mobile ), vision services , health education classes and behavioral health and substance use disorder ( SUD ) treatment .
In the past few years , WV Health Right has significantly expanded our behavioral health services . We recently added a behavioral health certified nurse practitioner and a licensed psychologist with a doctorate in psychology to our team . The increased availability of services , which are available at the main clinic and both the Covenant House and West Side locations , have made it possible for more of our neighbors to receive the help they need during times of struggle .
WV Health Right ’ s outreach services have recently grown . In addition to two new satellite clinics , we now have a mobile medical outreach team that visits local and rural communities with a particular focus on providing COVID-19 vaccinations and HIV and Hepatitis C testing , and offering PrEP to prevent HIV or HIV medications to those already infected , as well as linkage to recovery services .
Operating in its fifth year , our mobile dental clinic travels between Boone , Clay , Logan , McDowell and Roane counties bringing much-needed dental care to more than 5,000 individuals . This program has successfully improved dental access , reduced emergency visits and led to superior health outcomes
