Consisting of six counties , West Virginia ’ s Northern Panhandle is almost a world of its own . Nestled in between the Ohio River and the Pennsylvania border , this area boasts unique tourism destinations , a rich history and growing industries .
The region has a population of 132,295 as of the 2010 census , and while geographically narrow , it is packed with possibilities . Within the Northern Panhandle lies Wheeling , the state ’ s former capital , located about an hour from Pittsburgh , PA . Wheeling is home to Oglebay Park , a selfsufficient park , and Oglebay Resort , a getaway destination consisting of a zoo , spa , golfing and more .
When it comes to education , the Northern Panhandle has five colleges and universities , including Bethany College , West Liberty University and Wheeling University .
Natural gas production is a primary industry in the southern part of the Northern Panhandle with a growing construction industry as well . There is a growing movement to redevelop brownfield sites with new meaning and purpose . In the Northern Panhandle , the possibilities are endless .
When it comes to health care , also a major employer in the region , look no further than the trusted teams at Weirton Medical Center , Wheeling Hospital and WVU Medicine ’ s Wetzel County Hospital and Reynolds Memorial Hospital .
A region with one of the most diverse populations in the state , the Northern Panhandle is a hub of culture , and its people are admirers of the arts . The Ashley Marie Performing Arts Center , located in Weirton , is home to the Striplight Community Theatre , offering performances and improvisation groups . Within Wellsburg is the Brook Hills Playhouse , a theater renovated from an apple barn , which has five shows each season . The Northern Panhandle is the place to be for fun and culture .

Perhaps one of West Virginia ’ s most famous exports is the colorful and beloved Fiesta tableware , which is produced by the Homer Laughlin China Company in Newell . Test your luck at the Mountaineer Casino , Racetrack & Resort or visit the world ’ s largest tea pot located in Chester . Moundsville is home to the historic West Virginia Penitentiary , Prabhupada Palace of Gold and Adena Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex . Grand Vue Park , also in Moundsville , consists of 7,540 feet of dual zip lines , hiking and biking trails and an aquatic center . Weishar Enterprises , a historic glassware company with fans all over the world , is located in Wheeling , and so is Oglebay Resort , offering a place to stay and play .
