McCuskey is also passionate about child internet safety and other emerging online threats, such as artificial intelligence( AI).

“ The emergence of AI is the greatest threat to consumers,” he says.“ We have received complaints in our office of scammers using deep fakes and voice cloning to try to trick people. It is scary stuff and makes it even harder to know what can be trusted and what cannot. We are actively fighting back against these scams and encourage consumers to report all scams to our consumer protection division. We also encourage you to verify claims through trusted sources and remain skeptical.”

McCuskey’ s office has filed a lawsuit against Apple for its role in allowing child sexual abuse material to be stored and shared and recently reached an $ 11 million settlement with Roblox, prompting new safety features to be added to the popular online kids’ game.

“ I have two young daughters who love Roblox, so I know how popular it is, but our investigation found serious failures that left children exposed to real danger,” he says.“ The investigation found that Roblox’ s historical safety design allowed child users to be exposed to sexual predators, grooming and sexual and violent content, putting every child on the platform at risk. We could not allow that to happen and had to act through legal action against the company. Bringing the issues to light has prompted real change within the game. Roblox has agreed to verify the age of all users before granting chat access, block all chat until age verification is complete, restrict adults from contacting users under 16, alert minors the first time they enter a private chat and block adult-rated material proactively. In addition to those in-game safety changes, the company has also agreed to dedicate a West Virginia-based internet safety specialist to coordinate directly with state law enforcement and conduct training with law enforcement, schools, parents and kids. The company also agreed to pay the state $ 11,080,000 in damages.”
