Rachel Burdette
“ I love the people and the caring nature that they possess . It ’ s not for the faint of heart , but I push through to be the best for my family and my team daily .”
Rachel Burdette is the managing director of tax for Forvis Mazars . In her role , she enjoys being challenged daily and helping clients solve problems with solutions for their business or individual needs . She credits self-awareness and drive for her success as an accountant .
“ There aren ’ t many people who will outwork me ,” she says . “ I also think it ’ s important to be aware of how you are perceived when it comes to coaching and growth . I ’ m not perfect in this area , but again , awareness is the key step .”
Like Ballard , Burdette acknowledges former partners Sandy Thomas and Bob Simpson for support and guidance in her career , as well as Andy Young and Mary Fischer . Her experience has taught her the importance of flexibility .
“ Clients , our teams and our families need us to be flexible ,” she says . “ Most days will not go as planned . You may only get to cross one thing off your to-do list because five more popped up . Be flexible and give yourself grace .”
Burdette initially enrolled at Marshall
University as a political science major with ambitions of becoming an attorney . However , after a summer internship in Akron , Ohio , before her freshman year , she realized she did not want to be an attorney and quickly pivoted to accounting .
“ My mom always kept the books for the company my grandfather owned ,” she says . “ I think this gave me a window into part of the accounting world , but I had no idea how much more was out there .”
Burdette received a softball scholarship and was part of the first Marshall team to play on the new softball field as part of Conference USA . During her years with the Herd , the northeast Ohio native developed a fondness for life in West Virginia .
“ I love the people and the caring nature that they possess ,” she says .
Burdette considers having both a family and successful career to be her greatest accomplishments .
“ It ’ s not for the faint of heart , but I push through to be the best for my family and my team daily .” •
