WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center Helps Patients Stay Close to Home

WVU Hospitals ( WVUH ) opened the emergency department and 10 inpatient beds at Fairmont Medical Center on June 30 , 2020 , and announced plans in April 2021 to add 32 additional inpatient beds . Plans are in the works to increase that number quarterly until the hospital is able to accommodate 42 beds .
Since opening Fairmont Medical Center , WVUH has expanded the services offered at the hospital , including :
• Cardiology and vascular care
• Neurology
• Diagnostics , including echocardiogram , stress echocardiogram and treadmill stress testing
• Outpatient imaging services , such as x-ray , CT , ultrasound and MRI
• Outpatient sleep lab
• Pulmonology
• Inpatient dialysis
• Outpatient laboratory testing

The emergency department at Fairmont Medical Center provides a critical link between people who have experienced illness and injury and the same level of care that can be received at J . W . Ruby Memorial Hospital . All physicians working in the Fairmont Medical Center emergency department are board certified or board eligible , which is uncommon for small , community hospitals , and the smaller patient load means shorter wait times .
“ We ’ ve created a unique situation here at Fairmont Medical Center ,” says Stuart Godwin , M . D ., Fairmont Medical Center medical director . “ Because we ’ re a sister campus , we are able to bring in the expertise offered by the same physicians you would find at a large , academic medical center in a community setting . This helps us improve the quality of care and direct our patients to the treatment they need much more efficiently , whether that means treating them in the emergency department and releasing them or transporting them to Morgantown for more complex care .”
Physicians from Ruby Memorial Hospital are available to offer clinical consultation to Fairmont Medical Center patients in emergency department or inpatient settings . These specialties currently include behavioral medicine , endocrinology , infectious diseases , nephrology , neurology and pain medicine . This allows for critical collaboration to establish the correct plan of care , avoid transfers and keep patients close to home .
The estimated $ 100 million investment in the facility also includes plans to add a 30-bed skilled nursing unit , additional ambulatory clinics , four operating rooms , two procedure rooms , a central energy plant and a pharmacy . It is expected that the increase will also result in more than 250 new jobs .
