West Virginia ’ s Transformative Community Foundations
COMPILED BY PHILANTHROPY WEST VIRGINIA
Resiliency and generosity have been in the DNA of West Virginians since the state ’ s founding in 1863 . This year , in celebration of the Mountain State ’ s 158th birthday , Philanthropy West Virginia recognized this spirit of giving with the release of its Transforming Rural : Accelerating Community-Based Philanthropy Report . The report highlights the growth of the state ’ s community foundations over the past 20 years . With leadership and investment from the Claude Worthington Benedum and Ford foundations , these organizations have fostered support and created a broader base of charitable funds for local communities . The report was compiled by M . Miller Development Services and captures data on the current size , capacity and needs of 15 community foundations and six affiliates or funds under the parent of a community foundation . •
