WVNCC Unveils Campus

Improvements and Expanded Programs for Fall Semester

WVNCC Celebrates 50 Years of Educating and Training the Ohio Valley
On May 9 , 1972 , the West Virginia Board of Regents created a dual-campus community college out of what were formerly the Hancock County branch and Wheeling campus of West Liberty State College . The board specified that the newly created institution , West Virginia Northern Community College ( WVNCC ), was to be a comprehensive community college responsible for educational programs of a two-year or less duration for high school graduates and adults .
WVNCC is excited to celebrate its 50th anniversary , culminating in a gala on May 14 , 2022 , in the newly renovated Scottish Rite Building . Festivities for the 50th anniversary will begin in September with the burying of a time capsule to be opened in 2047 on WVNCC ’ s 75th anniversary . Other events include a 1970s Halloween bash and outdoor movie and the unveiling of the college ’ s history nook , which will highlight its first 50 years .
If you drive around the southwest end of downtown Wheeling , you will notice big changes to the campus of West Virginia Northern Community College ( WVNCC ). Several parking lots have received a makeover , including new greenspace and campus signage , which has greatly enhanced the landscape of downtown .
“ These campus improvements are the most recent of several major projects we have on the drawing board for the college . These enhancements greatly benefit our students and are another example of the college ’ s role in the revitalization of downtown Wheeling ,” says WVNCC President Dr . Daniel Mosser .
While these are some of the most prominent and aesthetically pleasing improvements , many other changes are taking place too . Northern has added many new programs just in time for the upcoming fall semester . These programs include engineering and construction management , pre-K-5 elementary education , hospitality and tourism , industrial technology management , substance abuse intervention specialist and substance abuse intervention technician . In addition to these new programs , WVNCC ’ s existing criminal justice program can now be completed 100 % online .
WVNCC has also greatly expanded its non-credit industry certification programs , trainings and career development opportunities . These programs are designed to provide students with the specific skills needed to quickly enter the workforce or advance in their current career while meeting the employment needs of local businesses and employers in the region . New non-credit offerings include EMT and paramedic , CDL tractor-trailer driver and certified nursing assistant to name a few .
“ We met with local businesses and employers and determined these courses are a vital need in our region ,” Mosser says . “ I am proud of how quickly our economic and workforce development team identified these needs after meeting with area businesses and started offering these programs in our community . It is a testament to WVNCC ’ s commitment to meeting our community ’ s learning needs .”
