The Oakland Estate Serves as Important Piece of WVU Parkersburg Foundation
Once sprawling over 400 acres in the Parkersburg area , The Oakland Estate proudly witnessed history as West Virginia gained its statehood and the Parkersburg area expanded .
Built by James McNeil Stephenson in 1832 , the home has hosted and housed a myriad of notable guests and residents . Until recently , Oakland maintained its status as a family home where it saw over five generations of the same family grow up and become prosperous members of the community . Today , the home is part of the WVU Parkersburg Foundation , which continues to celebrate the Stephenson ’ s commitment to community and service . The foundation provides scholarship opportunities to students at the college who might otherwise not have the access to a college education . Not only does the foundation support traditional scholarships for tuition , it also houses funds for other organizations , including Riverhawk Farm , The Arts Collaborative of the Mid-Ohio Valley and the Student
Emergency Fund . The Student Emergency Fund supports student requests for everything from transportation needs to groceries to testing fees for students who otherwise would not be able to succeed in their education .
“ The Student Emergency Fund helps students who are in dire need of assistance and don ’ t have the means to help themselves at the moment . It gives them the extra boost to continue their education when they could easily stop pursuing it ,”
says Torie Jackson , president and CEO of the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation . “ It is our job to make sure our students have every opportunity at success possible , and Oakland is a piece that helps make that possible .”
Recently , the foundation hosted a Toast to West Virginia on the Oakland property to celebrate West Virginia ’ s birthday and the estate ’ s rich connection to its history , which raised more than $ 3,500 . •
