“ West Liberty University is committed to working toward the goal of literacy growth for our youth across the Mountain State . I would like to thank the Benedum Foundation for its support in assisting higher education to close the literacy gap ,” says Dr . Franklin Evans , WLU president .
Heeding the call to raise West Virginia ' s third-grade reading proficiency rate , which hovers at 44 %, the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative joined forces with the West Virginia Department of Education , the Benedum Foundation and Marshall University ’ s June Harless Center to improve the state ’ s literacy levels by the end of third grade . Chosen from a pool of 64 applications , the nine grant recipient projects were selected by a committee of literacy experts .
CASA of the Eastern Panhandle Welcomes New Board Members
Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Eastern Panhandle ( CASA-EP ) has appointed six new members to the organization ’ s board of directors for 2021 . Newly designated directors include Reverend Dr . GT Schramm , Reverend Dean Lawrence , Kristen Gingery , Mary Butler , Gloria Shoemaker and Amy Panzarella .
“ We are delighted to welcome our newest directors to help guide this growing agency ,” says Executive Director Michelle Sudduth . “ They each bring unique talents and perspectives to advance the mission and vision of best interest child advocacy in the Eastern Panhandle .”
The new directors are appointed to a two-year term . The 18-member board includes broad representation from Morgan , Berkeley and Jefferson Counties .
“ We are fortunate to have a very dynamic and committed group of individuals on the CASA-EP board of directors . They provide invaluable support and insight , particularly so during the growth and evolution of this past year ,” says Susan Caperton , board president . “ Their passion for the organization is pivotal to ensuring that we provide the best possible advocacy for the children and families of this community .”
