The Eastern Panhandle is home
to several of the fastest-growing
counties in West Virginia. That’s why
WVU Medicine, the state’s largest
not-for-profit health care system,
has invested millions of dollars in
expanding facilities and services
at both Berkeley Medical Center in
Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical
Center in Ranson.
WVU Medicine has been redefining
quality health care and wellness in
the Eastern Panhandle since 2005.
With millions invested in upgrades,
strong physician recruitment efforts
and the addition and expansion of
services, leadership at WVU Medicine
has made significant improvements
in the patient experience and quality
of care offered.
The Shepherd Entrepreneurship and
Research Corporation (SERC) was
established as a nonprofit to support
the development of projects and
partnerships that advance research
and economic development initiatives
for Shepherd University and the
region it serves. Currently, eight
projects are underway with three
having reached full implementation
in service agreements with local
partners: aerial support services for
local businesses, the new Society
for Creative Writing and facilities
hosting services at historic Popodicon.
Other projects and partnerships
being developed by SERC include:
the Center for Regional Innovation,
Both Berkeley and Jefferson counties
are home to WVU Medicine Urgent
Care Centers and medical office
facilities that provide a multitude of
physician specialties from primary
care to rehab to full laboratory
services. Both hospitals have
received recognition from numerous
national organizations and are
recipients of awards and distinctions
for their programs and services. As
both communities continue to grow,
so does WVU Medicine, as it keeps
pace with the health care needs of
the area.

a goal of hosting incubator services;
FASTEnER Lab, which will allow
SERC to serve as a liaison to help
Shepherd’s art faculty provide
support services, including 3-D

Farm, a venue that recently received
solar electricity, Wi-Fi and a high-
tunnel greenhouse for the Vets to
Agriculture program through a USDA
federal cost-sharing agreement and
a grant from Women Investing in
Shepherd; Civil Military Innovation
Institute, an initiative exploring
partnership ideas with SERC to help
Eastern Panhandle businesses gain
access to federal contracting;
and Institute for Civil Political
Communications, which is being
funded by a $1 million gift from
Bonnie and Bill Stubblefield and
