That’s why WVU Medicine, the state’s largest not-for-profit health care system, has invested millions of dollars in expanding facilities and services at both Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson. WVU Medicine has been redefining quality health care and wellness in the Eastern Panhandle since 2005. With millions invested in upgrades, strong physician recruitment efforts and the addition and expansion of services, leadership at WVU Medicine has made significant improvements in the patient experience and quality of care offered. The Shepherd Entrepreneurship and Research Corporation (SERC) was established as a nonprofit to support the development of projects and partnerships that advance research and economic development initiatives for Shepherd University and the region it serves. Currently, eight projects are underway with three having reached full implementation in service agreements with local partners: aerial support services for local businesses, the new Society for Creative Writing and facilities hosting services at historic Popodicon. Other projects and partnerships being developed by SERC include: the Center for Regional Innovation, Both Berkeley and Jefferson counties are home to WVU Medicine Urgent Care Centers and medical office facilities that provide a multitude of physician specialties from primary care to rehab to full laboratory services. Both hospitals have received recognition from numerous national organizations and are recipients of awards and distinctions for their programs and services. As both communities continue to grow, so does WVU Medicine, as it keeps pace with the health care needs of the area. a public-private initiative identifying business and industry partners with a goal of hosting incubator services; FASTEnER Lab, which will allow SERC to serve as a liaison to help Shepherd’s art faculty provide support services, including 3-D printing, for local businesses; Tabler Farm, a venue that recently received solar electricity, Wi-Fi and a high- tunnel greenhouse for the Vets to Agriculture program through a USDA federal cost-sharing agreement and a grant from Women Investing in Shepherd; Civil Military Innovation Institute, an initiative exploring partnership ideas with SERC to help Eastern Panhandle businesses gain access to federal contracting; and Institute for Civil Political Communications, which is being funded by a $1 million gift from Bonnie and Bill Stubblefield and will formally open on campus in early October.
