FROM TIME TO TIME, people ask me what a normal day at work is like at the magazine. My answer is that it usually depends on the day. Some days are full of phone calls, meetings and administrative tasks, while others include sales pitches, editorial brainstorming, photo shoots, award receptions and business events.
I, like most people, attend a large number of networking and celebratory events for work each year. This helps ensure that others around the state are familiar with West Virginia Executive( WVE), and it helps me keep tabs on the growth and development of the business communities throughout the state. As we look forward to fall— it will be here before we know it— and the beginning of 2019, there are a number of great events on the horizon I am looking forward to attending.
Some of the events that are coming up are oldies but goodies. The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’ s Annual Meeting and Business Summit will convene at The Greenbrier on August 29 for two and a half days of networking and information sharing, and the West Virginia Governor’ s Conference on Tourism, which will be in Morgantown in September, is a great opportunity to catch up with our tourism friends and see what opportunities are on the horizon. We look forward to attending and sponsoring both of these events each year. We also look forward to WVE’ s Young Guns reception every fall.

This year it will be on November 15 at the West Virginia Culture Center, and we will honor yet another class of individuals ages 43 or younger who are not only excelling in their careers but are championing their communities through service.
While we love these annual events, we also enjoy checking out new events. This fall, we are participating in AlignHR’ s first-ever West Virginia Small Business Conference on September 6-7 at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place. The staff at WVE will be lending a hand to help create the conference’ s West Virginia marketplace, an expo-style event showcasing some of the state’ s wild and wonderful manufacturers, artists, craftsmen and vendors.
We are also excited to host our first reception in the New River Gorge area at Adventures on the Gorge on September 13. The reception will be a celebration of the amazing people, businesses, natural beauty and recreational opportunities offered by this iconic location and will be a great networking opportunity.
In addition to all these great events, WVE will be having its annual retreat in September at The Resort at Glade Springs. This is a long weekend intended for us to let our hair down and have some fun while also taking a step back and looking at the opportunities WVE has for growth. Our retreat is one of my favorite events because our small company shuts itself away from the world to focus on brainstorming and planning. In a time when print is believed to be dead, we are chugging along full speed ahead, and our annual retreat is a good indicator of this.
I hope you’ ll come out and visit with us at some of these events this fall. We’ ll have a booth, so make sure you stop by and say hello. If there are additional events in your area, I encourage you to seek them out and sign up. The networking alone is worth it, but being in a room with other West Virginians committed to your local community is a motivating experience we should all engage in. •
