Inside the Renovation
The Iconic Charleston
Civic Center
By Samantha Cart
Located in the heart of the Capital City, the
Charleston Civic Center has been a hub for business,
art and entertainment for almost 60 years. Built in
1958, the last capital improvements were made to
the structure in 1980. Charleston Mayor Danny Jones,
key players on the Charleston City Council and the
civic center staff realized that in order to become
competitive in the convention market, upgrades
needed to be made to keep the facility on par with
regional and national standards.
