20 different cities in the U.S. to convey the non-dilutive technology funding opportunity provided through the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. The Morgantown SBIR Road Tour stop hosted several participating federal agencies, including the National Institute of Health, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards & Technology, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Science Foundation and Small Business Administration. Representatives from these agencies were on hand to talk one-on-one with individuals about their research goals for the coming year. In addition to networking, educational sessions and panels, participants met with agency program managers to discuss their programs and services. The survey, which is sponsored by Hospitals & Health Networks, consisted of 680 participants representing an estimated 2,146 hospitals nationwide. The survey examined how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance, quality and safety and clinical integration to provide an overall better patient experience. “University Healthcare is honored to be named a Most Wired hospital and receive this prestigious recognition,” says Anthony Zelenka, president and CEO of University Healthcare. “We are making significant investments in technology to enable our providers to improve the outcome for our patients and realize our full potential as a leader in providing high-quality care.” West V irginia State University Receives National Science Foundation Grant for Bioenergy Research West Virginia State University (WVSU) has received $300,000 from the National Science Foundation to research seed storage compounds and bioenergy with the goal of enhancing crop growth on reclaimed surface mine lands. The competitive grant award will provide hands-on research and training for six undergraduate students and establish a collaborative partnership for faculty and graduate students with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The United Nations predicts that by the year 2050, the world’s population will grow to more than 9 billion, resulting in the need for an enhanced system of food production and supply. Therefore, the project is focused on creating robust, high-energy crops for changing environments, such as reclaimed surface mine lands. “This research will advance knowledge in the field of plant biotechnology by characterizing for the first time previously unidentified mechanisms regulating seed storage compounds and unlock new and creative avenues for enhancing molecular engineering of plant crops,” says Dr. Sanjaya, director of WVSU’s Energy and Environmental Science Institute and the project’s lead scientist.
