IGVC challenges student teams to build and operate autonomous robotic vehicles on an outdoor course with defined lanes, detect obstacles and follow waypoint navigation. It is a design experience that is at the very cutting edge of engineering education. “The fact that Bluefield State College was the smallest school in the competition and one of only a very few colleges or universities there without an engineering graduate school makes our performance even more meaningful,” says Riggins. Allegheny Insurance Announces Launch of Mobile App Allegheny Insurance Services, Inc. has announced the launch of a mobile app for its clients’ insurance needs. “We are excited to be able to offer a mobile app for our clients, available both on iTunes and Google Play,” says James Wallace, president of Allegheny Insurance. “Now they can easily access their insurance policy information and be guided through the steps to take in the event of an auto accident.” Features of the app include the ability to create individual inventories for homes, offices and multiple other spaces; the ability to store values, dates of purchase, photos and descriptions and the ability to generate PDFs of these inventories. The app’s accident support feature provides guidance of what to do in case of an auto accident, including the steps to document the accident and submit a claim; what to collect from drivers, passengers, witnesses and police and how to easily access roadside assistance and repair shops. West Virginia Northern Community College Partners with NASA for Training Opportunities West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) and the NASA/West Virginia Space Grant Consortium have partnered twice in recent months to provide significant training opportunities for two faculty members and an honors student. This year, David Stoffel, assistant professor and program director of computer information technology, and Adam Beatty, computer information technology instructor, participated in intensive week-long courses in Morgantown. Stoffel took the Systems Engineering Teacher Certification training course while Beatty took the Cyber Security Teacher Certification training course. Stoffel and Beatty will now be able to integrate NASA-approved materials into CIT courses offered at WVNCC. This is particularly important because the CIT program is offering a new associate in applied science degree in cyber security for the fall semester, which begins August 29. David Craig, a first-year mechatronics student at Northern’s Weirton campus, was awarded an internship through NASA this year and worked this summer at the Touchstone Research Laboratory in Triadelphia. Craig hopes to transfer the knowledge and skills acquired at Northern to the mechanical and aerospace engineering program at West Virginia University and from there to a career in space exploration. SBIR Road Tour Draws Crowd in Morgantown The SBIR Road Tour recently made a stop at the WVU Media Innovation Center in Morgantown, WV.
