At the World Steel Association General Assembly in Washington, D. C., Metallurgical Coal Producers Association( MCPA) President Ben Beakes delivered a simple message to global steelmakers: met coal makes steel, and steel makes modern life possible.
The U. S. coal landscape has changed dramatically. As coalfired power generation has declined sharply since 2008, many American producers have shifted toward becoming near pure-play metallurgical coal companies— supplying a product that remains

indispensable to the steel value chain. Yet for too long, that story lacked a dedicated voice. That’ s why the MCPA exists: to represent the companies and communities that produce the critical raw material behind bridges, ships, pipelines, vehicles and the buildings we work and live in.
Today, the U. S. produces roughly 70-80 million short tons of metallurgical coal annually, exporting about 70 % to steelmaking markets across Europe, Asia and South America— ranking the U. S. as the world’ s second-largest
