Developing West Virginia ’ s Workforce

Economic development agencies , manufacturers and government officials frequently mention that a lack of available skilled workers hinders West Virginia ’ s efforts to attract new industry and discourages existing manufacturers from expanding . In response , the Robert C . Byrd Institute ( RCBI ) at Marshall University has developed the most comprehensive and diverse portfolio of manufacturing workforce development and training programs .

RCBI ’ s multi-pronged approach includes :
Career Skills Programs : RCBI offers machinist and welding technology programs that prepare students for high-paying jobs close to home . Graduates of its programs — who earn industry certifications and the option of an associate degree — find employment in their chosen fields more than 95 % of the time . Manufacturers and other industry sectors , such as energy , contact RCBI constantly asking to hire our graduates .
Customized , On-Demand Training : RCBI offers specialized training on-site at manufacturing facilities large and small across the state or at one of RCBI ’ s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centers . Topics range from computer-aided design , machine operation and computer numerical controlled ( CNC ) programming to advanced welding techniques , 3D printing , forklift operation and safety .
Apprenticeship Works : RCBI directs the only nationwide advanced manufacturing apprenticeship program , which helps companies across West Virginia and in 20 other states develop the skilled talent they need by creating U . S . Department of Labor-registered apprenticeships in 20 occupations — everything from tool and die , robotics , quality control , machining and welding . RCBI recently received $ 4.5 million to further scale this initiative .
