A Critical Community Resource
In 1979 , a group of Greenbrier and Monroe County residents identified domestic violence as an alarming problem affecting individuals in the area . Their passion for ending physical , sexual and emotional abuse developed into a private , nonprofit 501 ( c )( 3 ) organization providing needed resources to the community .
Today , Family Refuge Center serves as a domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center in the tri-county area with administrative offices in Lewisburg and outreach offices in Pocahontas , Monroe and Mercer counties . The organization diligently works to serve everyone , not just women ; it is committed to helping all people : men , women and children alike .

Family Refuge Center ’ s services include a 24-hour hotline , temporary shelter , empowerment counseling , legal advocacy , prevention education , support groups , adult basic education and vocational planning , children ’ s groups and activities , a summer day camp , tutoring , parent education and support , child sexual abuse investigation and crisis intervention .
Family Refuge Center simultaneously works to encourage and promote healthy family life and provides prevention and education services .
