WVSOM Vice President Hill Receives National Recognition
Months after receiving a prestigious statewide award for community advocacy , Drema Hill , Ph . D ., MSP , the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine ’ s ( WVSOM ) vice president for community engagement and development ,
Drema Hill . was chosen to present research at the nation ’ s largest conference devoted to rural health .
Hill presented “ Rural West Virginia Responds to Opioid Injection Epidemics ,” on which she served as co-investigator , at the National Rural Health Association Conference in Albuquerque , NM . The association selected the research project as one of four to be presented during a substance abuse-themed session .
In November 2021 , Hill received recognition throughout West Virginia when she was named the recipient of the 2022 Small Communities , Big Solutions Advocate award . The Small Communities , Big Solutions Conference is hosted annually by The Alliance for the Economic Development of Southern West Virginia , the West Virginia Community Development Hub and Coalfield Development .
Hill says she is thankful for her more than three decades spent working in public health leadership positions .
“ I am honored to be recognized at the state level for my work to build rural community infrastructure and to share that work with a national audience ,” Hill says . “ Growing up in rural Boone County , WV , I learned a practical approach to health care and life . I take a similar approach to
research and program development .”
In her role at WVSOM , Hill oversees the school ’ s Center for Rural and Community Health , WVSOM Foundation and WVSOM Alumni Association . Hill joined WVSOM in 2016 and became one of the school ’ s seven vice presidents in 2019 .
She previously received the West Virginia Rural Health Association ’ s Award for Excellence in Rural Health , the Tennessee Department of Health ’ s Tennessee AIDS Centers of Excellence Award , Cumberland University ’ s Peer Quality Award and the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Center Neil Diehl Award for Excellence in HIV / AIDS Care and Treatment .

West Liberty University ( WLU ) celebrated 185 years of history during its 2022 Founders Day .

Founded as a private academy by the Virginia Legislature and first called West Liberty Academy , WLU traces its roots to a time when the state of West Virginia didn ’ t even exist . The Virginia Legislature granted the charter that established WLU as a private academy in West Liberty , then the county seat of Ohio County .
