As the Mountain State was getting ready to roll into a beautiful spring season last year , the coronavirus presented itself and brought with it many struggles and challenges . However , as we typically do , West Virginians faced it head on with innovation and determination . At Dominion Energy , we quickly modified our normal work routines to continue serving our customers and helping our communities , while keeping both the public and our employees safe . In addition to following all recommended CDC guidelines , we also implemented a work from home policy for those that could do so without interrupting service to our customers or compromising safety .
Our local distribution company , Dominion Energy West Virginia ( DEWV ), provides gas service to approximately 112,000 residential and commercial customers in 35 West Virginia counties . More than 300 DEWV employees operate over 5,000 miles of distribution and gathering pipeline across the state and interact with many third-party contractors . In addition to the standard precautions against COVID-19 ,
DEWV developed special customer response teams that received specific training and extra personal protective equipment to allow safe entry into customer homes . Vehicular operational guidelines and work reporting locations were also adapted to fit social distancing protocol .
Our Mount Storm Power Station in Grant County relies on more than 180 employees to provide continuous operation that generates 1,629 megawatts to power more than 400,000 homes . Site leadership took extra actions to keep employees safe , including modification of the rotating work schedule to minimize exposure between different groups , providing athome COVID-19 testing kits , hiring an environmental company to provide deep cleaning services and purchasing special equipment to help employees efficiently disinfect common touch areas .
Last year brought additional changes to our company . In the middle of the pandemic , we also sold our transmission and storage assets . Even during the transitional period after this divestiture , we maintained focus
on safety — our number one core value . We also continued to support our communities and nurture many environmental and coronavirus relief initiatives . We entered a corporate partnership with The Nature Conservancy of West Virginia , awarded over $ 520,000 in charitable contributions and completed some Employees in Action volunteerism projects .
Diversity and inclusion are important to our company . They not only affect our bottom line , but they are an integral part of our core value of One Dominion Energy — our term for teamwork .
