Bessie ’ s Floral Designs in Oak Hill , WV , has been a community staple for 30 years . Focusing on offering arrangements for any occasion , Bessie ’ s has been there for numerous milestones and life events . The former owners , Barbara and Bill Halstenberg , were looking for someone to carry on the shop ’ s tradition as both are nearing their seventies . After having a chance conversation , Ashton Critchley made the decision to purchase the shop with the goal to continue its traditions while also looking toward the future .
Critchley took ownership of Bessie ’ s Floral Designs in August 2020 and has spent the past few months bringing it forward and making flowers relevant again .
“ Flowers really do make the perfect gift . They can be given for any occasion , and , with the pandemic , they ’ ve been a great way to remind friends and family that someone is thinking of them during these trying times ,” Critchley says .
Critchley is looking forward to offering more options at Bessie ’ s Floral .
“ In 2020 , we established our monthly floral subscription service , which provides a fresh arrangement each month based on seasonal availability ,” she says . “ This year , we are working toward utilizing a portion of the building to create a hot house so we can offer more seasonal flower options . We also hope to create a floral market where customers can come in and create their own arrangements .”

This year , they are expanding their services by offering an event concierge service . This new service will allow Bessie ’ s to help customers connect with venues and vendors who can help bring their event to life . They will also be offering a limited number of appointments to bring their staff on as your event coordinator .
