The Mountain State’ s most vibrant region is rich in history and scenic beauty. Famous for John Brown’ s historic raid in Harpers Ferry, the strategic location at the gateway into the Shenandoah Valley made it a target for both the North and South during the Civil War.
The home of Civil War spy and femme fatale Belle Boyd is in Martinsburg and open to the public. Visit that, then explore the Martinsburg Roundhouse, once burned by General Stonewall Jackson, and tour a secret tunnel in the home of a Revolutionary War general.
The Eastern Panhandle is known for its wonderful selection of dining venues offering contemporary cuisine in fun, eclectic settings, many with spectacular views and outdoor dining options. Don’ t miss the endless wine selection at Brix 27 in downtown Martinsburg, a casually sophisticated atmosphere where every seat feels like a cozy corner for reconnecting with friends. Take in

Rafting and river tour outfitters like River Riders Family Adventure Resort have both white water and flat water opportunities for tubing, rafting and kayaking on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. The world-famous Appalachian Trail crosses over the Potomac River into West Virginia at Harpers Ferry and is home to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Headquarters which includes a visitors center with exhibits, activities and a hiker lounge.
For a peaceful walk in the woods, it’ s hard to beat the Tuscarora Trail. The Tuscarora is a 250-mile-long spur trail of the Appalachian Trail with trailheads near Luray, VA and Harrisburg, PA. Much of the 33 miles in West Virginia is located within the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in Berkeley County.
