Editor ’ s
One of my favorite quotes is from Margaret Atwood , author of “ The Handmaid ’ s Tale ”: “ A word after a word after a word is power .”
While she was speaking about the impact of her novel , I find this quote resonating deeply in almost every aspect of my work as a writer .
I have been writing for as long as I can remember , and it has brought me to where I am today — an editorial and production manager for the state ’ s premier business publication .
My time at West Virginia Executive ( WVE ) has proved how impactful words can be when they are strung together to tell the story of the beautiful place we call home . I ’ ve experienced a kind of confidence and fearlessness I didn ’ t think possible through learning about the amazing things and people within our borders .
At WVE , we speak to a myriad of remarkable people . During my time here , I have connected with countless West Virginians who make our state great , and I ’ ve gotten to know them through writing their stories . I ’ ve also had the chance to research and discover places that , despite my 22 years in the Mountain State , I may have never otherwise known about . Through each awards ceremony I ’ ve attended , I ’ ve listened to the stories of accomplished professionals , all of whom were guided by hard work and a love for their home state .
These things remind me why I chose to be a writer ; to help spread an important message , this one being that West Virginia is a place worth fighting for .
Young people like me , especially those who tend to be
timid or hesitate in taking risks , often feel nervous about the complicated landscape we are attempting to navigate . However , those inspirational stories help me realize that change and success are possible no matter what situation you ’ re in as long as you have the drive and motivation to reach for it . This is a powerful message for those of us who are just scratching the surface of the professional world .
Not only has working for the magazine inspired me to strive for something great , but it has also taught me not to let my fears or uncertainties hold me back . If my fellow West Virginians can do it , then so can I . See you next time ! •
