For Patrick O ’ Malley , hard work has always been synonymous with success .
“ My sole motivation on a daily basis is to provide for my wife and daughters , while also setting an example of how you must work for something if you want it ,” says O ’ Malley . “ Knowing my wife , Laura , and my daughters , Colby and Chaney , are in my corner is an awesome feeling , and I never want to let them down .”
A devoted husband , father and sports enthusiast , this Charleston native spends much of his spare time coaching his daughters ’ basketball teams and running the girls ’ division of the Hurricane Amateur Basketball League .
“ Being the dad of two girls has guided me to find a way to make sure girls in my community grow up confident and help them understand they can be anything they want ,” he says .
Growing up playing basketball , O ’ Malley used his talents and work ethic to earn himself the title of 2001 West Virginia Player of the Year and received a full scholarship that same year to play for the University of Richmond .
“ My first job as a professional was actually basketball . I signed a contract to play overseas in an Irish basketball league with the MDS Stars out of Belfast , Northern Ireland ,” he says . “ This was an awesome experience , as I had worked years and years to reach this point of my basketball career . It also allowed me to live and explore a completely different part of the world .”
Though his first professional career briefly took him overseas , O ’ Malley has always kept his roots firmly planted in his beloved home state , where he now serves as regional president of West Virginia for Truist .
“ The thing I enjoy most about my role is the interaction I get to have with great leaders around our state . Knowing that Truist can play a small but vital role in moving West Virginia forward is very rewarding ,” he says .
Crediting his father for his interest in banking , O ’ Malley currently leads the West Virginia region at Truist , building relationships and fostering lasting connections to help move the state toward greater economic prosperity .
“ It is more than just banking at Truist — we are guided by our purpose , which is to inspire and build better lives and communities ,” O ’ Malley says . “ Our team is passionate about being involved in the communities where they live and making sure we have a positive impact on the lives we touch .”
With a true emphasis on impacting the lives of others , O ’ Malley dedicates a large portion of his time to giving back to the community .
“ I am involved with a lot of different boards and nonprofit organizations , but the thing I am most passionate about is having a positive impact ,” says O ’ Malley .
He currently serves as a board member for the University of Charleston , Discover the Real West Virginia Foundation , West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute , Boy Scouts of America Buckskin Council , West Virginia Bankers Association , West Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Leadership West Virginia .
O ’ Malley is also the treasurer for Charleston Main Streets , a community development entity focused on the revitalization of the West Side and East End , and a board member of Daymark , an organization based in Charleston that shelters runaway and homeless youth .
Aside from shooting hoops and spending time with family , giving back to his home state and the community of people that helped shape him is one of O ’ Malley ’ s greatest joys in life .
“ Being born and raised in West Virginia made me the person I am today , and I feel a sense of loyalty to help the next generation know what we have to offer ,” he says . “ Our state is comprised of passionate , loyal , caring and hardworking folks , and I couldn ’ t think of a better place to raise a family .” •
