The High Technology Foundation has launched an effort to develop an innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in West Virginia involving the commercial climate and weather industry . The objectives of the initiative include improving climate science , expanding the commercial climate and weather industry and having a transformative economic impact on the central Appalachian region .
A little-known fact is that West Virginia is home to one of the biggest data collection sites for climate and weather in the world . Located at the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont , WV , are operations of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) that provide the collection and analysis of a substantial portion of the data NOAA uses to pursue its mission . They include NOAA ’ s Environmental Security Computing Center , the backup NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites — R Series ground station , the backup NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System ground station , the NOAA Space Weather Follow-On ground station and the NOAA Security Operations Center . There is no other colocation of NOAA data collection and high-performance computing like this in the nation .
The innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem envisioned by the High Technology Foundation would help leverage this resource to potentially revolutionize climate science and transform the commercial climate and weather sector . Because of the multibillion-dollar economic potential of this sector , it could have a transformative impact on central Appalachia . The value of the existing
commercial climate and weather industry is over $ 7 billion . NOAA has estimated that if technology were put in place to make working its massive data collections easier and more affordable , the commercial market would at least double .
To put that technology in place , NOAA has partnered with Microsoft , Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud to improve data accessibility by leveraging the cloud services of each of the companies . The High Technology Foundation is in
