WV KIDS COUNT Announces Champion of Children
WV KIDS COUNT announced its Champion of Children award recipients for The State of West Virginia ’ s Kids Summit and Awards on October 4 , 2022 . In coordination with the release of the 2022 WV KIDS COUNT Data Book , the organization recognized community leaders who champion the child well-being domains : education , health , economic well-being and family and community . With some very recognizable names , KIDS COUNT is honored to shed a bright light on West Virginians who lead by example .
This year ’ s overall Champion of Children is accomplished writer and speaker Emily Calandrelli . Calandrelli is the host and co-executive producer of the hit Netflix series “ Emily ’ s Wonder Lab .” Her chapter book series , “ The Ada Lace Adventures ,” centers around an 8-year-old girl with a knack for science , math and solving mysteries with technology . Calandrelli frequently gives talks about the importance of science literacy , the benefits of space exploration and the challenges for women in STEM careers for clients like Google , Pixar , MIT and Texas Instruments as well as dozens of K-12 schools across the nation . Prior to her work in science communication , she attended West Virginia University ( WVU ). Through her work , she wants to make science relatable , easy to understand and more exciting today than ever before .
The Education Champion of Children is Amiee Figgatt . Figgatt makes it her life ’ s work to inspire children . As the education and outreach specialist for the West Virginia Conservation Agency , she envisioned a mobile learning center to share her passion for conservation education with students . The result was the West Virginia Soil Tunnel , which traveled over 25,000 miles and served more than 60,000 children across the state . Figgatt also serves the community by mentoring students on a high school robotics team to help them teach , inspire and empower other children with STEM skills .
This year ’ s Economic Well-Being Champion of Children is Brandon Dennison . Dennison is founder and CEO of Coalfield Development , which incubates social enterprises designed to diversify Appalachia ’ s coal-based economy and cultivate opportunities for people facing barriers to employment . Born and raised in West Virginia , Dennison never forgot seeing people his own age desperate for jobs . In 2010 , he founded Coalfield Development to respond to poverty in Appalachia through on-the-job training , higher education and mentorship .
The Health Champion of Children is Dr . Jamie Jeffrey . Jeffrey has devoted her career to pediatrics , research , advocacy and community outreach in the field of childhood obesity prevention . She is a pediatrician and clinical associate professor of pediatrics at the WVU School of Medicine-Charleston Division . She founded and is the medical director of HealthyKids Wellness and Weight Management Program at Charleston Area Medical Center and the director of KEYS 4 HealthyKids . The mission of KEYS strives to make the healthy choice the easy choice by improving the nutrition and physical activity practices , policies and environments for kids and their families .
The Family and Community Champion of Children is Bobby Nicholas . Nicholas has seen and accomplished so much during his 25 years of service to the state of West Virginia , and he has done it with a humble , service-driven heart . In addition to his past fundraising experience for WVU Medicine , Bobby has served Mission for Miracles and The Miami Project . He has curated the annual All-American Grand Bash fundraising events for the past eight years donating over $ 2.4 million to regional hospitals and affiliated foundations .
All champions have a lifelong dedication to improving the well-being of children in the Mountain State and believe every child in West Virginia counts . •
