Not surprisingly , COVID-19 has also profoundly affected higher education — but not all the effects have been negative . For example , much to the delight of American and Canadian medical school students , step two of the U . S . Medical Licensing Examination — an on-site exam aimed at testing students ’ clinical competency — has been suspended indefinitely .
Step two had been under fire for some time because it had a 90 % pass rate and was administered in only five cities — Atlanta ,
Chicago , Houston , Los Angeles and Philadelphia — making many students incur burdensome travel time and expenses .
“ As a result , osteopathic medical schools have to attest for the clinical competency of their students before they graduate ,” says Dr . James Nemitz , president of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine .
The pandemic has also significantly increased the use of telehealth , where medical professionals consult with patients remotely .
