North Central West Virginia Airport ( CKB ), nestled in the region ’ s heart , plays host to aerospace passion and infrastructure while providing crucial air transportation access . Through partnership with entities such as the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex and the Harrison County Economic Development Corporation , the airport serves as a catalyst for innovation while providing opportunity for all .
North Central West Virginia is on a path to become a new mecca for business relocation , thanks in part to CKB . We are a designated Aero- Tech Zone and integral part of the state ’ s high-tech corridor for prominent aerospace , biometrics , engineering , and energy companies . Our greatest selling point is our diversified demographic , worldclass work ethic and low turnover rates . This has created a synergy between industries and the airport . One does not exist — or thrive — without the other .
Our region ’ s relatively low unemployment rate , low cost of doing business and presence of world-renowned organizations — such as the FBI , Department of Defense Army Biometrics Task Force , Pratt & Whitney Engine Services , Mitsubishi Heavy Industry , Lockheed Martin and Aurora Flight Sciences – A Boeing Company — demonstrate the area is a trailblazer in technological advancement . We are an example of public-private partnership success . Recent announcements , including the acquisition of Bombardier by Mitsubishi and Pratt & Whitney ’ s decision to invest in additional programs at its Bridgeport facility , are reasons companies want to invest here . They see opportunity .
Our aerospace education and training programs are among the nation ’ s best . Harrison County Academy of Aviation and Technology offers an aviation curriculum that is also offered to high school students throughout the state . West Virginia ’ s only Part 147 Aircraft Maintenance Technology Program is offered at Pierpont Technical & Community College ’ s Robert C . Byrd National Aerospace Education Center . This facility is the center hub of our region ’ s workforce pipeline , creating FAA certified airframe and powerplant mechanics necessary to attract aerospace employers . Fairmont State University ’ s Aviation Center of Excellence provides Part 141 pilot training . West Virginia University offers bachelor ’ s and master ’ s degree programs in aerospace and mechanical engineering , which support industry partners and provide a boost to the economy : a point of pride .
The airport ’ s continued growth and $ 1.1 billion annual economic impact have helped us become the state ’ s largest aviation and technology cluster and a strategically located aerospace and technology hub for the country . The leadership displayed by airport management , the Benedum Airport Authority Board and public-private partners is second to none . The region ’ s exploration of out-of-the-box ideas to develop and fund projects ensures costs remain low for tenants and airline partners — partners who are integral to the future success of the area .
Advancements in technology will make distance matter less and provide economic and educational opportunities for our communities . Where people want to live and work has changed , and corporate strategy is finding ways to adapt . The North Central West Virginia Airport and its public and private partners are up to the challenge .
