Behind the Scenes
Charleston Coliseum & Convention
Center Renovation/Expansion
While the big players on the design/build team for the $100 million
Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center—BBL Carlton, tvsdesign and
ZMM Architects & Engineers—are well known, the individuals who
helped turn the vision into reality often remain behind the scenes.
Rodney Pauley, project manager for ZMM, was intimately involved in
the renovation from the time the design/build competition started to
the final ribbon cutting, attending every construction and contractor
meeting. “It was great to watch the drawings come to life,” he says.
“This is one of the few projects in my career that will affect so many
people’s lives, and that is a great feeling. It’s also nice to be able to
walk through and see the little things that have my stamp on them.”
Pauley worked closely with project architect Nathaniel Spencer, AIA, a
longtime ZMM employee. “We took tvsdesign’s big picture and figured
out the details on how things would come together,” says Spencer. “I
can’t see another project like this coming along in my lifetime, and I
feel very fortunate to have worked on it.”
Scot Casdorph, PE, an electrical engineer at ZMM, was responsible for
designing all the major components of the new electrical system, including
the central plant, a brand-new switch gear and six substations—all
while the venue remained open for business. Despite the challenge,
Casdorph is proud of the finished product. “There is a pride in knowing
you played a role in a major project in your community,” he says.
Casdorph’s work went hand in hand with that of Samuel Butzer, PE, a
mechanical engineer and mechanical project manager who utilized his
background in design/build projects to facilitate a seamless transition
between his drawings and the mechanical contractor’s work. “I drew
the mechanical system in 3-D, and if you take my drawings over there
and look at what was actually built, it looks exactly the same,” he says.
In addition to these team members, ZMM helped deliver the Charleston
Coliseum & Convention Center with a team of more than 35 local employees
that spent more than 25,000 hours on the project with a focus on
enhancing both the facility and the quality of life for their neighbors.
