The Shepherd University College of Business( COB) launched this past summer, combining three academic departments— business administration, economics and finance and accounting— along with the Master of Business Administration.
“ One advantage to our students is we can now develop programs with the integrative and interdisciplinary skills they need in the business world,” says Dr. Ben Martz, COB dean.“ Skills such as problem solving, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation are critical in today’ s world.”
Business leaders from across the region will serve on advisory boards, give lectures and curriculum advice and provide internships. Martz is also reaching out to various departments at Shepherd to create programs that will offer business expertise to students in other majors.

According to Forbes, by 2020 there will be 200 billion connected devices. As society becomes more dependent on these technologies, new threats occur from cyber hackers all over the world. The response to these threats is to train cyber security professionals to be the front-line defense.
The University of Charleston’ s new Master of Science in cyber security( MSCS) program will train students to detect and prevent digital crime with courses focused on investigative techniques, critical thinking and policy development. This degree can be completed online and prepares students for an occupation with a projected growth rate above the national average. Job opportunities include chief security officer, information systems operations, cyber operations planning, security program management, security planning and company networking policy development.
As many face uncertainty with the local job market, an MSCS degree provides a unique skill set and a career path with robust growth.
West Liberty University
The newest master’ s program in biology at West Liberty University( WLU) offers science majors strong preparation that leads to rewarding professional careers in research, teaching or health care. Through this program, students can either earn the Master of Arts( M. A.) in biology or the Master of Science( M. S.) in biology depending on the curriculum followed.
“ West Liberty University is the first regional university in the state to offer the master of biology,” says Dr. Stephen Greiner, WLU’ s president.“ We know it will open the door to many career possibilities that will benefit our state’ s workforce.”
The M. S. in biology often leads to jobs such as research technicians for the pharmaceutical industry or academic labs, environmental consulting work or entry into doctoral programs, while the M. A. in biology prepares students for professional schools such as dental or medical school. WLU also offers the state’ s first accelerated M. S. in biology, which allows the completion of a bachelor’ s and master’ s degree in five years.
Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College( SWVCTC) is now offering a series of courses on unmanned aerial systems. Newly enacted rules by the Federal Aviation Administration on routine commercial use of unmanned aerial systems has created a pathway to integrating the airspace and advancing growth to the $ 82 billion market and an estimated 100,000 new jobs over the next decade.
SWVCTC is partnering with local and regional industry leaders and Maysville Community & Technical College through an Appalachian Regional Commission POWER Initiative grant to prepare students for this growing occupation. This new program will allow students to enjoy working with the latest in drone technology and explore a variety of career options while earning skill set certificates or a full degree.
