COMMUNITY GUIDE 2026
Safe and secure around the clock
With a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial areas and natural landscapes ranging from lakes to wooded areas, public safety agencies play an essential role in maintaining the safety and quality of life throughout the west Lake Minnetonka area. A combination of municipal departments and shared-service agencies work together to provide police, fire and emergency services across the region.
Law enforcement services are provided through several agencies. The West Hennepin Public Safety Department serves the cities of Maple Plain and Independence. The Orono Police Department provides police services to Orono, Mound, Spring Park and Minnetonka Beach. The city of Long Lake contracts with the Wayzata Police Department for its police services, while the Minnetrista Public Safety Department serves Minnetrista and St. Bonifacius.
Fire protection in the area is provided through a combination of local and joint departments. The Shoreline Fire Department now serves Long Lake, Orono and Medina, following the consolidation of the former Long Lake and Orono fire departments. The Maple Plain Fire Department serves Maple Plain and Independence, while the Mound Fire Department provides service to Mound, Minnetrista, Minnetonka Beach, Shorewood and Spring Park.
