Orono Schools: a place to learn, excel
The Orono Public Schools is consistently recognized as one of the top-performing school districts in Minnesota, offering a strong combination of academic excellence, student support and community connection. The district emphasizes scholarship, character development and meaningful relationships to help students achieve success both in and out of the classroom.
Serving just under 3,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, Orono Public Schools provides a small-district environment where students are known, supported and encouraged at every stage of their education. The district’ s size allows for individualized attention while still offering a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities.
The district operates four main school buildings on a centralized campus in Long Lake: Orono Schumann Elementary( grades K – 2), Orono Intermediate School( grades 3 – 5), Orono
Middle School( grades 6 – 8) and Orono High School( grades 9 – 12). This unified campus layout helps foster continuity and a strong sense of community among students, staff and families.
In addition to its academic offerings, the campus features extensive facilities that support student activities and community use. These include the Orono Activities Center, a swimming pool, Morrison Ice Arena, multiple gymnasiums, auditoriums and outdoor athletic fields. The Oliver H. Kelley Environmental Learning Center and other outdoor spaces provide opportunities for hands-on learning and environmental education.
Orono High School is a member of the Minnesota State High School League and competes in the Metro West Conference, offering a wide range of athletic and co-curricular programs. The district also integrates character education throughout its curriculum, reinforcing values that support lifelong learning and personal growth.
