Academic excellence at Orono Schools
The Orono Public School District ranks among the best across the state and the nation year after year. The district places a strong emphasis on academic scholarship, character, and connectedness to ensure personal fulfillment, growth, and a lifelong love of learning.
Dr. Kristine Flesher is the superintendent of Orono Schools. The district is governed by the Orono Board of Education. Board members are Chair Sarah Borchers, Vice Chair Todd Madson, Clerk Laura Wallander, Treasurer Wendy Lundsgaard, and Directors Gavin Tempero and Timothy Usset. More information about the board can be found at www. oronoschools. org / schoolboard. Meetings are open to the public and livestreamed on the Orono School Board YouTube channel.
Four school buildings are located on a beautiful, 120- acre campus on Old Crystal Bay Road in Long Lake: Orono Schumann Elementary, grades K-2; Orono Intermediate School, grades 3-5; Orono Middle School, grades 6-8; and Orono High School, grades 9-12. The Discovery Center in nearby Maple Plain is the hub for Orono Community Education— from Early Learning and Preschool programs to a myriad of enriching classes for community members of all ages. Visit www. oronoschools. org for contact information, school hours, enrollment information and more.
The central campus is also home to the Orono Activities Center( opened in 2019 with memberships available to the community), a swimming pool and the Morrison Ice Arena. The Oliver Grieb Abbott Environmental Learning Center also includes the Orono Rotary Learning Pavilion for outdoor science and environmental education classes.
Pesonen Stadium, multiple tennis courts, four campus gymnasiums, two auditoriums and ample fields for football, soccer, baseball, softball, and other outdoor recreation provide the setting for athletic and co-curricular activities. Orono High School is a member of the Minnesota State High School League and the Metro West Conference. The community is proud to support their Spartans in all endeavors!
Orono Schools has a longstanding commitment to weaving its Character program throughout the curriculum. It is also an important part of districtwide goals, leadership programs, and staff development.
As a small district of just under 3,000 students K-12, Orono offers an environment where teachers and staff can focus on connectedness and developmental needs at every grade level. All students are known! Come visit and learn why we say,“ SMALL in size, BIG in achievement.”
